This market square in the city centre is bordered by the 120-year-old covered market hall, the Kauppahalli. The colourful old granary buildings on the Torinranta waterfront house restaurants, cafés and small craft, clothing and interior shops. Vendors range from early-morning vegetable sellers to food and restaurant product sellers who trade until late evening. A bronze-style statue of the Toripolliisi, the Market Policeman, stands in front of the hall, recalling the market constables of old.
The square was once a busy port and export hub and later became a meeting place for townspeople and visitors from the countryside. The town was granted trading rights in 1531 and officially founded in 1605, with tar and salmon among its early exports. The car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible.
