The monument commemorates the Battle of Kostianvirta, fought in 1713 during the Great Northern War. Carl Armfelt commanded the Finnish side and Fjodor Apraksin the Russian. The monument was erected in 1906 on the shore of the Kostianvirta rapids, designed by J. A. Packalén.
A reconstruction of a log fortification has been built at the site, and defensive trenches from the battle era are still visible in the terrain.
