This regional responsibility museum, founded in 1888, was named Finland's Museum of the Year in 2019. The permanent exhibition Elon merkkejä tells the history of Satakunta and its people across generations. The current exhibition, Viikinkien aikaan – Hallan tarina, presents Viking Age life in Ala-Satakunta, with guided tours usually held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Besides the main museum it runs three other museum sites and serves as the city's official tourist information point.
Ticket sales come with travel advice. The Museum Card is accepted, and admission is free for under 18s and students, with a reduced ticket for adults. The car park, entrance and toilet are wheelchair accessible. Ongoing projects include a Lavia home-district museum and the Museomatka Satakuntaan regional museum tourism project.
