This riverside historic area is known for red-ochre painted warehouses and wooden houses along cobbled streets. It is surrounded by a National Urban Park stretching over the river valley. The town is the second oldest in Finland after Turku, and received town rights in the 14th century. The Diet of 1809 was convened here by Alexander I, marking the start of autonomous Finland. The Empire-style part of town includes the home of national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg.

The area has restaurants, cafes, chocolateries, boutiques, shops and B&B or hotel accommodation. Local shops sell Finnish design, handicrafts, handmade chocolate and souvenirs. Guided tours are offered, including a storytelling walking tour. The car park and entrance are wheelchair accessible.
