The museum is run by the Totto local heritage association, founded in 1951 and named after a traditional northern warning fire. The association collects and preserves local history objects, documents and photographs, and protects historical and cultural heritage and nature. The museum stands on the bank of the Kemijoki river and has a riverside sauna that hosts public sauna evenings.
In winter the main building is open by appointment and during events, and the summer season starts in June. The premises are also used for meetings, celebrations, training and recreation. The association organises volunteer work days, events and cultural coffee gatherings for all ages, and anyone can join as a member.
