The largest cemetery of the Turku and Kaarina parish union was founded in 1807 outside what was then the town, to plans by architect Charles Bassi. Today it covers about 60 hectares, with some 45,000 graves. The Resurrection Chapel by Erik Bryggman dates from 1941, and the Holy Cross Chapel and crematorium by Pekka Pitkänen opened in 1967.
Buried here are 901 soldiers who fell in the Winter and Continuation Wars, along with many notable cultural figures. Eleven themed walking routes to the graves of architects, artists and others are on the Hautakartta website. There is also a veterans' grove and a memorial grove for children. The car park and entrance are wheelchair accessible.
