Founded in 1977, the supporting association develops maritime education and research. It established the Maritime Training Centre in 1980, followed by an agreement on maritime higher education with universities in 1982. The centre moved to state funding in 1984, when maritime law and maritime economics professorships were also created.
The association acts as an informal adviser in national projects and organises domestic and international seminars and Studia Maritima lectures. The office is in Auriga Business Center.
