This nature-like bypass lets migratory fish pass a regulating dam. Partly blasted into bedrock, the channel has a flow suited to salmonids and forms part of the rapids' restoration.
Navitas Kehitys Oy coordinates the restoration, with funding from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's NOUSU programme. Partners include the city, Stora Enso, WWF, the North Savo ELY Centre and the Haukivesi fisheries management area, which oversees monitoring of the rapids.
