Standing on a rocky hill in Katajanokka, Uspenski Cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in Northern and Western Europe and the centre of liturgical life for Helsinki's Orthodox parish and diocese. It was consecrated on 25 October 1868 to designs by the Russian architect Aleksei M. Gornostayev, and its dome rises to 33 metres. The crypt chapel honours the priest-martyr Alexander Hotovitzky, who led the parish in 1914–1917.
Outside services and parish events there is an entry fee, and tickets are sold online. Guided tours can be booked with the cathedral. The entrance is step-free, there is a stair lift at the west door, and the crypt has its own lift and an accessible toilet.
