Opened in 1889, Korkeasaari Zoo occupies its own island in Helsinki and is home to about 150 animal species, including wild cats and reptiles. It is run by a non-profit foundation whose main aim is protecting endangered species and biodiversity, and the island also has Finland's largest care centre for injured and orphaned wild animals.
The zoo is open every day of the year, and buying tickets online in advance is recommended. Visits usually take from 20 minutes to three and a half hours. There is no parking of its own, so drivers are directed to the Redi car park. There are restaurants, a café, a shop, grill spots and a playground, and the entrance and toilets are accessible.
