Founded on 12 May 1906 at the initiative of writer Johannes Linnankoski, this non-partisan civic organisation promotes Finnish culture, particularly Finnish-language culture. It publishes the Suomen Mieli members' magazine and guides to flags and surnames. It has campaigned for broader school language choices and the removal of compulsory Swedish.
Flag-use advice is available, and books and event tickets are sold online. It has organised the national Independence Day flag raising at Tähtitorninmäki since 1957. Event recordings and a talk programme are on YouTube. Its 1989 Viro fundraising campaign led to a foundation supporting Estonian culture and education.
