Founded in 1897, the central organisation brings together volunteer sea and lake rescue societies. Crews help people in distress at sea, along the coast and on inland waters, often following technical failures or difficulties with boating skills. It also promotes safer boating through information.
Volunteer units maintain round-the-clock standby during the open-water season. Operations cover coastal waters and several inland waterways. The organisation is a member of the International Maritime Rescue Federation.
