This stretch of the Vuoksi was known for salmon fishing in the 19th century, attracting visitors even from Russia. The rapids also drew painters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Berndt Lindholm painted the scene in 1872 in connection with the illustrated En resa i Finland project.
The rapids were harnessed in 1944 when the Ensonkoski power plant was completed. Damming left the pothole formations permanently submerged. The natural and cultural site forms part of Saimaa Geopark.
