Completed in 1899, the building is one of the few wooden buildings preserved in the city centre. It was first built as the hotel-restaurant Hotel Wahlgren and later served as a government office and school administration building. Alvar Aalto's first office opened here in 1923. The owner is the Ellen and Artturi Nyyssönen foundation, which uses the rental income to fund doctoral research at the university.
The rooms are rented for events and meetings together with catering from café Miriam's and restaurant Figaro. Nikolainsali seats 90 at tables and 120 for concerts, Jääkärikabinetti takes 10 to 16 people and Vihreä Salonki about 30. The venue suits family celebrations, weddings, memorial events, company dinners and meeting or training days. The railway station is close, with parking nearby.
