The club was founded in 1828 as Klubbsällskapet i Gamla Karleby and has used its current name since the 1830s. It has about 880 members. It was traditionally a men's club until the first two women were elected in 1916, and new members are admitted by secret ballot using black and white wooden balls.
The restaurant is open to everyone, with meeting and dining rooms for private persons, companies and associations. Lunch is a soup lunch (soup, salad and dessert) or a home-style lunch (main course, salad and dessert), eaten on site or ordered ready-made. Cash, bank and credit cards, ePassi and Smartum are accepted. An accessible toilet is available.
