The regional council coordinates development and advocacy for 11 member municipalities. It prepares the regional strategy, development programme, land-use plan and sea-area planning, and coordinates transport-system planning, including rail, air and maritime transport.
It administers EU and national funding for regional development projects. Cultural development is carried out with municipalities through the KUMAHA task, while tourism is supported through strategy work. Regional news is shared in a newsletter and at events. Advocacy includes cooperation with regions in eastern and northern Finland.
