Loading operations in the historic harbour began in 1871, and the Pakkahuoneenlaituri pier dates from 1879. The area includes the Vellamo maritime centre, Finnish Maritime Museum, Kymenlaakso Museum, Satama Areena, Ravintola Kairo and a Xamk campus opened in 2024. The icebreaker Tarmo and coast guard vessel Telkkä are displayed here.
An audio series about the harbour can be heard on site. The maritime festival has taken place here since 1999. A cruise passenger terminal was completed in the I-5 port shed in 2023, and events are listed in the Kymenlaakso event calendar.
