Founded in 1876, the non-profit association promotes Finnish culture and civic education. It organises lectures and discussions on cultural, educational and patriotic topics, with expert Friday lectures held since 1987.
The association has about 500 members and uses its premises for meetings and networking. Annual grants and scholarships support veterans' and civic organisations among others. Politically neutral since 1918–1919, it previously served as a meeting place for the Jäger movement and independence activists.
