The former steam sawmill on the Sahasaaret islands was founded by August Eklöf in 1870. Timber was exported mainly to France, with barges taking loads to sailing ships at Haikko roadstead. After a fire in 1890, the mill was rebuilt on a larger scale and operated until 1955. Workers' housing on Kaunissaari held over 600 people in the 1890s.
Surviving traces include shore pile reinforcements, a canal-like channel and remnants of the office garden. The buildings were demolished and the site levelled after the mill closed. The overgrown islands retain traces of their industrial past.
