The association was founded in 1919 and began by establishing an orphanage in Pispala. Its children's home activity, which had at most two homes, ran until 2017 and has since ended. Its stated values are caring for others, lovingness and individuality.
Toivontupa is a support association rather than a service provider. It uses the annual return on its assets to support Christian social work for children and young people, and since 2019 it has made separate decisions to support work with orphaned children and young people. It is governed by a board with a chairperson and five full members, elected for two years at the annual meeting.
