Among the largest primary schools in Turku, this one opened as an elementary school on 2 October 1905, with Väinö Kotkanen as its first teacher. Teaching has been on the current site since 1906, with a wooden building added in 1912, a stone one in 1929 and two more in 2005. Each year group has a bilingual French class (the B classes).
About 550 pupils attend, around 90 of them at the Uittamo unit, merged in administratively in 2008. Welfare staff include a nurse, a psychologist, a social worker and a psychiatric nurse, and there is learning support, elective subjects, an afternoon club and a parents' association. Families use Wilma, and the entrance and parking are accessible.
