The banks of the Aurajoki in Turku are known as the locals' living room. On the east bank are the cathedral, the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi, the Old Great Square and Brinkkala House, from whose balcony the Christmas peace is proclaimed. The west bank has Turku Castle, the market square, Vähätori and the main library, with cafés, restaurants and museums along the route.
A walk from the cathedral to the castle takes a few hours. The free Föri ferry crosses the river, and the Kakolanmäki funicular is part of public transport. River boats run as far as Föri, and electric picnic boats can be rented at Vähätori. The area is suitable for children, with an accessible entrance and car park.
