The promenade follows Ruissalo island's shore, linking villas and bathing houses. It starts at Kansanpuisto park, and the Via Dolorosa route uses the same coastal road. Most shoreline villas date from the 1800s, when merchant families built summer houses here. Remains of a Crimean War artillery battery are said to be visible at a bend in the road.
Ruissalo is a Natura protected area except for Saaronniemi, and visitors are asked to stay on marked paths. The entrance is wheelchair accessible, as is the parking area.
