The association is one of nineteen local associations of the Finnish Federation of University Women and was founded in December 1927 among the first of them. It brings together academic women of different ages and backgrounds for networking, peer support and discussion, and works for women's equality and education. It keeps links with universities, alumni networks, women's organisations and public decision-makers.
Activities include discussion events, study visits to organisations and companies, interest groups and voluntary charity work. The Norko-Turja fund supports projects that promote the wellbeing of older academically educated women. The association has published books on women's history and has run an Auroras network for educated immigrant women. Its website is available in Finnish and English.
