Tampere's largest market square officially opened for trade in 1900, built to serve a growing part of the city. From the 1920s to the 1940s it sold food daily, and from the 1970s to the 1990s its grills won cult status. Even in winter the grills serve sausage and chips and Tapola mustamakkara, the local black sausage, and in season fish stalls sell fried vendace and salmon soup.
From spring to autumn traders sell berries, vegetables, flowers, baked goods and handicrafts, and a café and a flea market run all year. Vendors include the butcher Kivikylän lihakauppa and potato grower Jaakkolan Janne. It is run by the local traders' association. Access and toilets are step-free.
