Founded in 1906, the cultural association brings together Karelians and people interested in Karelia and supports the Karelian language and culture. It publishes non-fiction, language learning materials, family histories, memoirs, Karelian literature and Karjalan Heimo cultural magazine.
Its online shop sells books, magazines and jewellery. Genealogy resources focus on White Sea, Olonets and Border Karelian families. The association maintains the Carelica library and Uutisčuppu news channel, organises events and awards project grants and student scholarships. A club plays kyykkä, a traditional Karelian throwing game, in Seurasaari, continuing a tradition begun in 1951. Membership is available.
