This non-profit, politically and religiously independent exchange organisation belongs to a network spanning over 50 countries. It arranges school-year, semester and shorter exchanges for students aged 15–18, who live with host families and attend local upper secondary schools. Rachel Andresen founded the organisation in the United States in 1951; Finnish operations began in 1958.
Applicants receive coaching and support from application to their return home. Parents and host families also receive preparation. The organisation recruits host families and volunteers, whose work supports much of its activity. The office is in HSL's main premises.
