The monument commemorates the battle fought on 23 August 1741 during the Russo-Swedish War known in Finland as the Lesser Wrath. More than 4,000 people were killed or wounded. Tradition identifies its core as a Swedish milestone from the 1740s. Officers of the Viipuri Finnish Jäger Regiment built the stone base in 1818.
It stands on the fortress's southern slope in Vanhapuisto park. A canopy was added in 1924 and a wider pedestal in 1949. Its materials include natural stone, granite, wood, copper and bronze. A plaque commemorates Major Juhana Henrik von Fieandt, who died in the battle.
