Museums in Tampere for a first visit: where to start and what to combine

This page covers museums in Tampere for a first visit: several under one roof in a museum centre, the Finlayson factory quarter, and art and old mansions. It helps you choose where to go for an hour, half a day or with children: every museum has an address and a short description, and photos and more details open in the card.

    Which group suits you

This page is useful if you have one day in the city and want to fit in two or three museums, if you are travelling with children, or if you are looking for somewhere to go on a rainy day.

How to plan the day: three areas on two banks of the rapids

    • The museums are in three areas: the museum centre on the east bank of the Tammerkoski rapids, the Finlayson quarter on the west bank, and separate addresses further out.
    • From the railway station it is about a 10-minute walk to the museum centre and about 17 minutes (1.2 km) to the Finlayson quarter.
    • One ticket to the museum centre covers more than ten exhibitions.
    • For one day, pick two areas rather than all three.

It is easier to choose the city's museums by area than from a list: you walk less and see more. The group “Under one roof” is a museum centre in a former factory hall by the rapids. One ticket covers more than ten exhibitions there, so it makes sense to set aside half a day. It is about a 10-minute walk from the railway station, and trams 1 and 3 stop at Koskipuisto, 600 metres away.

The group “In the Finlayson factory quarter” is on the other bank: about 17 minutes on foot from the railway station and about 9 minutes (600 metres) from Keskustori square. The museums are in neighbouring buildings of the former factory, and two fit easily into one visit.

The museums in “Art and mansions” each have an address of their own: the nearest is 500 metres from the railway station, the others are in the park above the factory quarter and on the Pyynikki slope. Each needs its own trip. All the museums in the city, including those not on this page, are in the catalogue category Museums. Other selections are in the section Rating of popular places, and public transport and Nysse tickets are covered on the Tampere page.

What to check before you go: Monday, Friday and exhibition changes

    • Monday: most museums are closed.
    • Friday afternoon: some of the city's museums have free admission.
    • Art museums close while an exhibition is being changed.
    • Small museums in mansions are not open every day.
    • Check the opening hours for the day of your visit on the museum's own website: the link is in the card.

Monday is the museums' day off. Most of the museums on this page are open from Tuesday to Sunday. One exception: a museum in the factory quarter is open every day in the winter season. Times of day differ from museum to museum, so look them up on the museum's own website before you set off.

Friday is the day to save money. The museum centre and the palace museum in the park have free admission on Friday afternoons, though some exhibitions in the museum centre still charge then. Two museums in the factory quarter are always free. Check the time of the free hours on the museum's website.

Art museums close between exhibitions for a few days or weeks. One of the mansions on this page is open only three days a week from September to April. Building work started in the Finlayson quarter in autumn 2026: the museums are operating as usual, but check on the museum's website beforehand which side the entrance is on.

Local background: a factory city and the Museokortti museum card

    • The city's museums are housed in former factories on both banks of the rapids.
    • The Museokortti museum card costs €86 and is valid for 12 months from the first visit.
    • An adult ticket costs from €3 (October 2026), and children under 7 mostly get in free.
    • The building of the city art museum is closed for renovation.

The city grew up around the Tammerkoski rapids, and its museums have settled into former factories on both banks. The museum centre opened in autumn 1996 in an old hall of the Tampella works, and in the Finlayson quarter a steam engine from 1900 still stands in its original place. A round of museums is therefore also a walk through the industrial centre. The quarter itself and other landmarks are in the catalogue category Landmarks & Historic Sites.

The Museokortti is an annual museum card: it costs €86 (October 2026), is valid for 12 months from the first visit and is accepted at more than 360 museums around the country. The paid museums on this page accept it. For a single trip to one city the card rarely pays for itself: adult tickets here cost from €3 (October 2026), and the most expensive is €18. The card is worth it if you also visit museums in other cities during the year. Prices are as of October 2026 and may change: check the price before your visit.

The city's own art museum by Pyynikintori square is not receiving visitors at present: the building is closed for renovation, and the new museum is planned to open at the turn of 2029 and 2030. The museum's temporary exhibitions are held in a hall in the factory quarter, but not all year round: check the dates on the museum's own website.

    Questions and answers

Which museums in Tampere are suitable for children?

Museums with hands-on exhibitions suit children: they are in the group “Under one roof”, and there is one more in “Art and mansions”. Children under 7 get into most museums on this page free, and a child ticket costs from €2 (October 2026).

Where can I see which exhibitions are on now?

On the museum's official website: the link is in every card. Exhibitions are not listed on this page, because they change several times a year and a museum may be closed while a new one is being installed.

How many museums can I fit into one day?

Two of the three areas are realistic in one day. From the railway station it is about a 10-minute walk to the museum centre and about 17 minutes to the factory quarter, and one ticket to the museum centre covers more than ten exhibitions.

Are there museums with free admission?

Yes: two museums in the factory quarter are always free. Two other places have free admission on Friday afternoons, but some exhibitions still charge then. Check the time on the museum's website.

Which museums are open on Mondays?

Most museums are closed on Mondays. According to its own website, one museum in the factory quarter is open every day from 18 August to the end of May. Check the day's opening hours on the museum's website.
