Finland's only museum of the history of water supply and water use is in Turku, in the old main building of the city waterworks on the bank of the Halistenkoski rapids. Water from the Aura River was purified here from 1923 to 1954, and the museum opened in 1998. Inside are a laboratory restored to its original state and an exhibition on a century of water use in the former chemical dosing hall.
Visits are guided tours in Finnish, Swedish or English, booked through the Aurajoki Foundation, with up to 20 people per group. The exhibition is on floor 2 up a narrow staircase, with no lift. There is free parking in front, and buses 10 and 10A stop at the waterworks.
